Infiorate di Spello

Ferragosto
Ferragosto is a very traditional Italian feast and along with Easter and Christmas, is the most important vacation period in Italy. It is celebrated every year on August the 15th and it is a public holiday so almost every business will be closed on that day. It is celebrated just in Italy, despite the major European countries where the 15th of August is just the mid-month day! In ancient Rome, this time was spent celebrating fertility and abundance, with people taking time off from work to attend festivals and compete in games and horse races. The celebration also corresponded with religious activities honoring numerous gods.

It is an ancient tradition in the city of Florence, Italy, celebrated on Easter Sunday, which consists of the explosion of a cart full of fireworks in front of the cathedral. The event commemorates the return of Pazzino de' Pazzi from the Crusades, who brought back stones from the Holy Sepulcher, used to light the “Holy Fire” and symbolize the resurrection of Christ. The ceremony includes a historical procession, a parade of a decorated cart called “Brindellone” pulled by oxen, and the flight of a mechanical dove that starts the fireworks.
